Dr Lisa Butler

Lisa qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2001 and took up post in the NHS Trust in Portsmouth to provide psychological therapy services within primary care and based in the GP practices across Portsmouth.  Over the next 11 years as Clinical and Service Lead, Lisa developed and grew the service until it was staffed by 34 clinical psychologists, CBT and EMDR therapists, counsellors and psychological well-being practitioners in 2012 after the service was awarded the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies contract in 2009.

After leaving the NHS Trust in 2012 Lisa joined the Clinical Psychology Doctorate Programme Team at the University of Surrey where she further developed her teaching skills in training the next generation of clinical psychologists.  In this post, she revised and delivered the CBT teaching across the 3 year training programme.  In 2015 Lisa left the employ of the University to concentrate on building up Psychology Services Portsmouth with the aim of again offering high quality psychological services to the people of Portsmouth and beyond.

Lisa has continued to develop her clinical skills and knowledge since obtaining her doctorate  in 2001 and has deepened her knowledge and experience Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), gaining accreditation with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy as well as acquiring skills in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) through completion of parts 1, 2 and 3 of the EMDR training programme.

In 2013 Lisa returned to part-time study to expand her long held interest in the field of attachment stemming from the work of John Bowlby.  Through this study and the undertaking of a number of additional short courses, Lisa has developed a deeper understanding of the impact of early childhood trauma and how this can affect the child far into their adult life.

Psychology Services Portsmouth has now been established for 9 years.  The Covid pandemic of 2020 presented many challenges to the psychological wellbeing of the population and forced many to develop new skills in delivering services remotely.  As a result of this experience Lisa now offers both online and in-person therapy making the service available to a wider population.
