Dr Imogen Howse
Imogen has worked in the field of mental health and social care since 1995, starting in the NHS as an Assistant Psychologist in Oxford working with adults with mental health problems and within services for people with learning disabilities. Imogen spent a period working in the USA as a Research Psychologist exploring ways to support the maintenance of family relationships over long distances. On her return to the UK she began working in Bristol and Bath supporting the work of counsellors in Substance Misuse, Young People’s Services and completing research exploring the best ways to support young people following a traumatic incident.
Since qualifying as a Clinical and Community Psychologist in 2006, Imogen has continued to work in the NHS delivering NICE recommended treatments for common mental health disorders as well as developing a private practice and providing teaching and supervision for the University of Surrey. As a trainer Imogen has experience in sharing psychological knowledge that can support the work of others in the helping professions. To this end Imogen and Lisa have developed a number of well-received bespoke training packages in fields including criminal justice, social care and physical health.

In addition to being a qualified Clinical Psychologist, Imogen is also an accredited CBT therapist. She has also practiced Interpersonal Therapy for Depression since 2002 and has an interest in the use of psychodynamic principles to the understanding of difficulties with everyday living. As a supervisor Imogen is on the BPS Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors (RAPPS), and abides by their code of conduct and training regime.

Julie Dickson
Julie initially trained as a nurse and qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 1993 and began working in a community setting. In 1996 she joined a random controlled trial in primary care, delivering a brief CBT informed treatment to people with medically unexplained physical symptoms. This introduction to CBT became pivotal in her career and lead on to formal training in 1998 as a cognitive behavioural therapist, at Kings College London. Julie has since worked across NHS services and independent practice delivering psychological therapy to adults.
In 1998 Julie joined the Portsmouth Psychological Therapies Team and between 2002 – 2004 moved to the Havant based community mental health team and Assertive Outreach Service to broaden her clinical experience. She returned to the Psychological Therapies Team and went onto develop and lead the Portsmouth Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Service between 2008 – 2012. Julie then took a career break, returning to the NHS in 2017, working for the Hampshire wide italk (NHS Talking Therapies Service) and more recently the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Staff Support Hub (for NHS and Social Care Staff) – supporting staff in context of the Covid pandemic. Julie left NHS employment in January 2024 and is now working solely independently.
Julie has completed training in a range of psychological approaches (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Comprehend, Cope and Commit model) and now considers herself to be an integrative practitioner with the therapeutic relationship at the heart of her clinical work. She is currently offering CBT and mindfulness-based therapies such as ACT and CCC to adults. As an accredited therapist, Julie has experience of helping individuals and groups with depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, emotion regulation difficulties, low self-esteem, adjustment, grief, conflict, stress & burn out at work and living with long term physical health problems.

Dr Lisa Butler
Lisa qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2001 and took up post in the NHS Trust in Portsmouth to provide psychological therapy services within primary care and based in the GP practices across Portsmouth. Over the next 11 years as Clinical and Service Lead, Lisa developed and grew the service until it was staffed by 34 clinical psychologists, CBT and EMDR therapists, counsellors and psychological well-being practitioners in 2012 after the service was awarded the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies contract in 2009.
After leaving the NHS Trust in 2012 Lisa joined the Clinical Psychology Doctorate Programme Team at the University of Surrey where she further developed her teaching skills in training the next generation of clinical psychologists. In this post, she revised and delivered the CBT teaching across the 3 year training programme. In 2015 Lisa left the employ of the University to concentrate on building up Psychology Services Portsmouth with the aim of again offering high quality psychological services to the people of Portsmouth and beyond.
Lisa has continued to develop her clinical skills and knowledge since obtaining her doctorate in 2001 and has deepened her knowledge and experience Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), gaining accreditation with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy as well as acquiring skills in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) through completion of parts 1, 2 and 3 of the EMDR training programme.
In 2013 Lisa returned to part-time study to expand her long held interest in the field of attachment stemming from the work of John Bowlby. Through this study and the undertaking of a number of additional short courses, Lisa has developed a deeper understanding of the impact of early childhood trauma and how this can affect the child far into their adult life.
Psychology Services Portsmouth has now been established for 9 years. The Covid pandemic of 2020 presented many challenges to the psychological wellbeing of the population and forced many to develop new skills in delivering services remotely. As a result of this experience Lisa now offers both online and in-person therapy making the service available to a wider population.
